Dear Friends,
How often do we despair of our future, making worry lists taller than the mountains we seek to climb? It seems irresponsible not to have a 5-year plan, a 10-year plan — even a plan for the weekend! But if we look to how our Savior taught us to pray for our needs in Matthew 6:11, we see only a one liner: a request for daily bread, fuel for one day. Several chapters later, Jesus again speaks against the “responsible” practice of fretting over our next steps, telling us not to worry about tomorrow, “For tomorrow will worry about itself.”
Although forecasting our worries sometimes seems prudent, what if you took a break for one week from asking for solutions to tomorrow’s problems and instead centered your prayer needs around just what you need for the day? Might such an approach recognize God’s sovereignty over the details and free you up to execute fully the tasks of the day?
Dear Heavenly Father, Forgive us when we borrow troubles from the future and make plans that cheapen the value of today. Please bless my friends to surrender their worry to you and trust you for the provision needed for the day.
In His Name,
Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
